“I’ve heard that. But it has to be amazing for all the culture. The theater, the art, the music.. I’m jealous. Me? Local. Very local. My whole family is from here. Mom, dad, three sisters, two brothers, fourteen nieces and nephews… I almost think we need our own colony within the city.”
“Oh, it sure is, I can’t knock off what an amazing place - culture and art wise - it is, you would love it, it’s just a tad overwhelming for someone like me. Oh wow, that is a huge family, girl. It must be awesome having so many relatives around that you can just visit or call on a whim. Say, if you ever get this colony established, would you guys be open to accepting a wayward new yorker as an entertainer and token comedic relief? I can earn my keep in music.”
“Fair enough. I learned a long time ago in your classroom that you want what you want when you want it and make no exceptions. I respect it. In fact, I find it incredibly sexy… Just one someone to sate my needs. You know I can be rather insatiable when no one takes me out of my box to play with me. What time tonight?”
“I would recommend you never to forget that lesson, but you’ve proven to be a quick study already, I have to admit. You’re headstrong, like me, and I rather enjoy the challenge. Ah, yes, and I have to admit to enjoy it immensely when the tension has build up in you, it makes for unforgettable nights. Any time, but if you get there early enough, I might even throw in dinner for two.”
The slight afternoon breeze coming through the open doors of the workshop barely doing anything to cool off her glistening skin, Gio hammered away at a piece of her latest creation, the protective glasses slipping further down her nose with every clash of metal against metal. The studio was closed for the day, her only employee long gone as she worked relentlessly for the fun of it, accompanied only by the distant sounds of a city that never paused.
It wasn’t uncommon to garner an audience whenever someone happened to stumble across the open gate, so she wasn’t phased by the figure she could see out of the corner of her eye. “Afternoon, ma'am.” The tall brunette called out, pausing her work to look at the visitor with a lopsided smile. “I’m afraid the studio is closed for the day, but is there anything I can do for you?”
“I’ll keep that in mind.. New York? That sounds amazing. I’ve never been to New York before. Have you been in San Fran long?”
“It has its appeal, I guess, just far too noisy and fast-paced for my liking, too distracting. Eh, about three years now, as soon as I stepped out of the train, I fell in love with it. But what about you, local or another migrating soul?”
“That’s just cruel and unusual punishment, Ms. Santiago.. Brilliant like his mother, that’s for sure. Though I know better than to think that sweet talk gets anything from you.. Ouch. I’m going to take that as a compliment actually. And there may have been one beautiful Navajo woman along the way.”
“No less than what you would deserve if you left me waiting, dear. Smart girl, but the compliment is still appreciated, it’s not like you need to rack up points or butter me up, as they say, not anymore. Do as you may, I’m not surprised. Ah, there it is, I knew there had to have been someone.”
“That would definitely be awkward to hear on the news: A rogue Puerto Rican woman stalking college campuses to give pap smears and breast exams. My parents would be so proud… So Aileen, are you from around here? Visiting?”
“I personally would be too damn confused and amused to properly process. I’m from here and there, wherever life takes me, but originally from New York, I think.“
“You say that like watching you make your own back arch is such a bad thing.. He’s going to be so tall. I’m glad you got to spend time with him. What is he in now, sixth? Seventh grade? Temperance. You know a lady never kisses and tells.”
“Who said anything about letting you watch, though? As expected, like his bastard of a father. He’s starting seventh already, such a brilliant boy. Oh, I am aware, dear, but I didn’t ask a lady.“
“That really was probably the best bagel I’ve ever had in my life. I even ended up giving away some free pap smears at the local community center… Wait. That sounded weird. Context: I’m a doctor. That would be really awkward if I was just walking around doing them and I wasn’t. I’m sorry, my mother always tells me I ramble and I can never seem to just stop talking.. Kind like now. Shutting up. Do you want to sit?”
“Wow, even with the context, this is already the best, most hilarious conversation I’ve had in months, thanks for the laugh. Sure, I’d love to, but please, don’t shut up on my account if it means more laughter.“
“That’s a great question. Perhaps I need a refresher myself… You did? That’s great. He’s such a handsome little guy. How is he doing?.. Ha, I definitely understand about enjoying break. A couple friends and I took off for the past two weeks. We went to Antelope Canyon for a while, camping and hiking. It’s on Navajo land. I got some amazing artifacts and we were able to sit in on a cleansing ritual. It was absolutely amazing.”
“Tonight. I’ll leave the back door unlocked, don’t make me wait or I’ll skip on your participation. He is… he’s getting so big, my gosh, you should’ve seen him! I believe he hit a growth spurt, he’s barely an inch or two shorter than me now. Sounds like someone had a lot of fun, any conquests on the way?“
